KIPDA Regional ITS Architecture

Home

The Kentuckiana Regional Planning and Development Agency (KIPDA) Regional ITS Architecture is a roadmap for transportation systems integration in the Louisville-Jefferson County Metropolitan Planning Area of southern Indiana and north central Kentucky over the next 20 years. ITS refers to Intelligent Transportation Systems, which use electronic technologies and communications to improve the safety and efficiency of surface transportation. The KIPDA Regional ITS Architecture has been developed through a cooperative effort by the region's transportation agencies, covering all modes. This regional ITS architecture was developed to satisfy the FHWA Rule 940 requirements, as well as the FTA policy directives, on ITS Architectures. The regional ITS architecture was developed based on information from a previous version of the architecture, documentation provided by stakeholders, and discussions with stakeholders, held in the form of a one-day stakeholder meeting on November 30th, 2016, and also held in the form of a webinar on May 10th, 2017. The presentation slides from these meetings are available by selecting "Resources" on top, then "Project Documents."

The KIPDA Regional ITS Architecture represents a shared vision of how each agencies' systems will work together in the future, sharing information and resources to provide a safer, more efficient, and more effective transportation system for travelers in the KIPDA region.

Time Horizon and Services

This regional ITS Architecture has a time horizon of up to twenty years with particular focus on those transportation elements likely to be implemented in the next ten years. The ITS architecture covers the broad spectrum of Intelligent Transportation Systems, including Traffic Management, Transit Management, Traveler Information, Maintenance and Construction, Emergency Management, and Archived Data Management over this time horizon.

About this Web Site

The purpose of the ITS Architecture web site is to encourage use of the KIPDA Regional ITS Architecture and to gather feedback so that it is used and continues to reflect the intelligent transportation system vision for the region. The menu bar above provides access to the stakeholders, the transportation systems in the region (the "Inventory"), the transportation services that will be provided, transportation-related functions that are envisioned, and the existing and planned interfaces in the region.

The majority of this web site was generated directly from a Turbo Architecture database which defines the details of the KIPDA Regional ITS Architecture. The source database can be obtained by contacting KIPDA at (502)266-6144 or KIPDA.Trans@ky.gov. An Executive Summary for the project is also available upon request. Information about how to use the website is found here.
