Equipment Package: TMC Freeway Management

Description: This equipment package provides center monitoring and control of freeway traffic control systems including ramp control, interchange control, and mainline lane control systems. Approaches covered include ramp metering, interchange connector metering, overhead lane control signals, freeway mainline metering, and variable speed control systems.

Functional Requirements 1 - The center shall remotely control systems to manage use of the freeways, including ramp meters, mainline metering, and lane controls.
2 - The center shall collect operational status from ramp meters, mainline metering, and lane controls and compare against the control information sent by the center.
3 - The center shall collect fault data from ramp meters, mainline metering, and lane controls.
4 - The center shall implement control strategies, under control of center personnel, on some or all of the freeway network devices (e.g. ramp meters, mainline metering, and lane controls), based on data from sensors monitoring traffic conditions upstream, downstream, and queue data on the ramps themselves.
5 - The center shall remotely control video surveillance equipment to monitor freeway operations.
6 - The center shall receive video images to support management of freeway operations.
7 - The center shall operate and control road closure gates to restrict traffic flow under adverse conditions.
