Service Package Description

This service package monitors vehicle speeds and supports warning drivers when their speed is excessive. Also the service includes notifications to an enforcement agency to enforce the speed limit of the roadway. Speed monitoring can be made via spot speed or average speed measurements. Roadside equipment can display the speed of passing vehicles and/or suggest a safe driving speed. Environmental conditions and vehicle characteristics may be monitored and factored into the safe speed advisories that are provided to the motorist. For example, warnings can be generated recognizing the limitations of a given vehicle for the geometry of the roadway such as rollover risk for tall vehicles. This service focuses on monitoring of vehicle speeds and enforcement of the speed limit while the variable speed limits service (covered in ATMS22-Variable Speed Limits service package) focuses on varying the posted speed limits to create more uniform speeds along a roadway, to promote safer driving during adverse conditions (such as fog) and/or to reduce air pollution.

City of Scottsdale Local Speed Monitoring System Roadway Equipment Coordination This equipment package supports direct communications between field equipment. It includes field elements that control and send data to other field elements. This includes coordination between remote sensors and field devices (e.g., Dynamic Message Signs) and coordination between the field devices themselves (e.g., direct coordination between traffic controllers that are controlling adjacent intersections.).
City of Scottsdale Local Speed Monitoring System Roadway Speed Monitoring and Warning This equipment package includes the field elements that monitor vehicle speeds. If the speed is determined to be excessive, then roadside equipment can suggest a safe driving speed. Environmental conditions may be monitored and factored into the safe speed advisories that are provided to the motorist. The characteristics of individual vehicles may also be monitored and used to warn vehicles with specific limitations that reduce safe operating speeds, e.g., rollover risk for tall vehicles. The operational status (state of the device, configuration, and fault data) is provided to the center. This equipment package can also provide an enforcement function, reporting speed violations to an enforcement agency.
Local Cities and Municipalities Local City and Municipal TMC TMC Speed Monitoring and Warning This equipment package remotely monitors and controls speed monitoring and speed warning systems. It remotely monitors vehicle speeds and presents this information to traffic operations personnel. It configures and controls the speed monitoring and warning equipment that provides safe speed advisories to the motorist. This equipment package can also notify an enforcement agency if excessive speeds are identified.
