Description

This project would install RWIS to measure roadway surface conditions, including on bridges. The RWIS would be connected to a DMS to advise motorists about unsafe pavement conditions.

Functional Areas

Roadway Environmental Monitoring

• The field element shall include surface and sub-surface environmental sensors that measure road surface temperature, moisture, icing, salinity, and other measures.
• The field element shall provide weather and road surface condition data to centers.
• The field element's environmental sensors shall be remotely controlled by a traffic management center.

TMC Environmental Monitoring

• The center shall assimilate current and forecast road conditions and surface weather information using a combination of weather service provider information (such as the National Weather Service and value-added sector specific meteorological services), da
